How to Upload a YouTube Short From a Computer or Phone
To upload a YouTube Short from a computer, open YouTube Studio, click Create in the top-right corner, choose Upload videos, and pick a video file that is up to 3 minutes long with a square or vertical aspect ratio. Fill in the title and details, choose who can see it on the Visibility step, and save. YouTube decides that the video is a Short from its length and shape, so there is no separate Shorts button to find. On a phone, open the YouTube app, tap Create, choose Short, and pick the video from your gallery. Those rules come from YouTube’s own help pages as of September 2026.
That covers most uploads. The rest of this guide covers the steps in more detail, the reasons an upload turns into a regular video by mistake, and what to do when uploading is no longer the slow part. We make Nichecast, a tool that produces Shorts for faceless channels, and it gets one section near the end. Everything before that works with YouTube alone.
What makes YouTube count an upload as a Short
YouTube’s help centre states two conditions, as of September 2026. A video counts as a Short when it is:
- up to 3 minutes long, and
- square or vertical in aspect ratio.
The three-minute limit applies to videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. A video uploaded before that date stays a long-form video even if it fits both rules today, so re-uploading an old clip is the only way to move it into the Shorts feed.
Here is the same thing as a quick check before you upload:
| Property | Counts as a Short | Counts as a regular video |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 3 minutes or less | Over 3 minutes |
| Shape | Vertical (9:16) or square (1:1) | Wider than square, such as 16:9 |
| Resolution | Up to 1080p for Shorts | Higher resolutions are fine |
The resolution row comes from YouTube’s note that Shorts can be uploaded “with a maximum resolution of 1080p.” A 9:16 video at 1080 by 1920 pixels is the safe default, because it fills a phone screen with no bars.
YouTube also says, on the same help page, that if you do not want a video classified as a Short you should use a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9. That is the one lever you control: shape and length decide the category, and nothing you type in the title changes it.
How to upload a YouTube Short from a computer
This is the route most channels use once they make videos in an editor rather than in the app.
- Go to YouTube Studio and sign in to the channel you want to post on.
- Click Create in the top-right corner, then Upload videos.
- Drag the video file into the window, or click Select files.
- On the Details step, write the title and description. Keep the title short, because the Shorts player shows very little of it.
- Answer the audience question (made for kids or not). YouTube requires it for every upload.
- Move past Video elements, which is built for long videos.
- On Checks, wait for the copyright check if you used any music or clips you did not make.
- On Visibility, choose Private, Unlisted or Public, or open Schedule to pick a date and time.
- Click Save or Publish.
If you close the upload window before you finish the Visibility step, YouTube saves the video as private on your Content page. That is useful when you want to come back later, and confusing when you think you published it.
Once the upload is processed, the video shows in the Content page of Studio under the Shorts tab if YouTube classified it as a Short. If it shows under Videos instead, see the troubleshooting section below.
How to upload a YouTube Short from your phone
The YouTube app handles both recording and uploading.
- Open the YouTube app and tap Create (the plus button).
- Tap Short.
- To use a video you already have, open your gallery from the camera screen and pick it. To record instead, hold the capture button.
- Trim the clip if you need to, then add text, music or filters.
- Tap Next, write a caption, and set the visibility.
- Tap Upload Short to post it, or Save draft to keep it for later.
YouTube’s help page notes that the default visibility is public for creators who are 18 or older and private for creators aged 13 to 17. Everyone can change it before uploading. Check the visibility setting every time, because the default publishes the moment you tap the button.
Why your upload became a regular video
Almost every “my Short isn’t a Short” problem traces back to one of these:
- The video is longer than 3 minutes. Even a few extra seconds of silence at the end pushes it over.
- The video is horizontal. Some editors and cameras export 16:9 unless you change it. A vertical video with black bars baked into the sides can also read as horizontal, which is why YouTube’s upload page advises against adding black bars to vertical video.
- It was uploaded before October 15, 2024. Older uploads over 60 seconds keep their long-form status.
- The file still has the wrong shape after editing. Some editors rotate the picture without changing the frame size. Check the exported file’s dimensions, not what the preview looks like.
Adding “#shorts” to the title is a habit many creators kept from the early days of the format. YouTube’s current help pages describe length and aspect ratio as the rules, so treat the hashtag as optional.
Choosing the right visibility for a Short
Visibility is where uploading turns into a workflow decision. Here is what each option does, per YouTube’s upload help page as of September 2026:
| Visibility | Who can see it | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone; eligible for the Shorts feed | Posting now |
| Unlisted | Only people with the link | Review before posting, sharing a draft with a collaborator |
| Private | Only you and people you invite | Holding a video you are not sure about |
| Scheduled | Private until the time you pick, then public | Posting on a steady rhythm |
A common routine for channels that post often is to upload everything as unlisted or private first, watch each one on a phone, and only then publish or schedule. It catches wrong captions and awkward cuts before anyone else sees them. Our guide on how to schedule YouTube Shorts covers the Schedule card in detail.
When the manual way is enough
For most people, uploading by hand is fine, and it is free:
- You post a few Shorts a week and make each one yourself.
- You record on your phone and edit in the YouTube app, so uploading is one tap at the end.
- Your channel is built around your own face, voice or footage, which no tool can supply.
In those cases the upload takes a minute or two, and the real work is filming and editing. Our guide on how to make a YouTube Short covers that side.
When uploading is not the slow part
Channels that post daily usually find the upload is the easy step. What eats the time is everything before it: finding a topic, writing a script, recording a voiceover, finding footage, adding captions, and exporting in the right shape. For a faceless channel that has no filming to do, those steps are the whole job.
That is the part Nichecast takes over. You describe the channel once: the niche, the style, and any rules of your own. Each video it makes goes through script, voiceover, footage and captions, is rendered as a 9:16 Short, and is uploaded to your own YouTube channel as unlisted. It never publishes anything.
So the upload steps above happen for you, and you pick up at the Visibility step:
- Connect your YouTube channel to Nichecast once.
- Ask for videos in the Nichecast studio.
- Open YouTube Studio. The new Shorts are in your Content list, unlisted.
- Watch each one, adjust the title or thumbnail, and delete any you would not post.
- Publish the keepers, or schedule them for the days ahead.
Because every video comes out 9:16 and well under three minutes, it lands in the Shorts tab without any of the troubleshooting above. The review in step 4 stays with you, which is the step YouTube’s policies on automated content expect a channel owner to keep.
The free plan includes 5 videos, with no card required. Pro is $29 a month for 30 videos. See pricing for the details, or try the free script generator, which needs no account, to see the writing before you sign up.
Uploading by hand next to having it done
| Step | Upload by hand | With Nichecast |
|---|---|---|
| Script and voiceover | You write and record | Made for you |
| Footage and captions | You find and edit | Made for you |
| Export as 9:16 | You check the settings | Always 9:16 |
| Upload to YouTube | Studio or the app | Done for you, as unlisted |
| Review and publish | You | You |
If you are setting a channel up from nothing, the faceless YouTube channel guide covers picking a niche and a posting rhythm before any of this matters.

How long can a YouTube Short be? Up to 3 minutes, for videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024, according to YouTube’s help centre as of September 2026.
Why is my Short showing as a normal video? It is most likely over 3 minutes, horizontal, or has black bars that make it read as horizontal.
